E-ink tablets and traditional tablets may look similar at first glance, but they are designed for very different experiences. While a conventional tablet is built to handle everything from streaming and gaming to web browsing, an e-ink tablet is usually designed around reading, writing, and staying focused.
The biggest difference is the screen itself. Understanding how each display works helps explain why one device may feel better for reading while the other is better for everyday computing.
What Is an E-Ink Display?
E-ink, short for electronic ink, is a display technology designed to resemble the appearance of ink on paper.
Instead of constantly illuminating a grid of pixels like many traditional displays, an e-ink screen uses tiny particles that move when an electrical charge is applied. These particles form the letters, images, and other information displayed on the screen.
This gives e-ink its distinctive paper-like appearance.
Why Does E-Ink Look Like Paper?
Traditional LCD and OLED screens produce light that travels toward your eyes. E-ink displays primarily reflect the light around them, much like a physical sheet of paper.
This difference can make e-ink particularly comfortable for long reading sessions. Some devices also have built-in front lighting, allowing them to be used in darker environments without changing the basic appearance of the display.
Traditional Tablets Work Differently
Traditional tablets generally use LCD or OLED displays. These screens are designed to refresh quickly and display bright colours, animations, photographs, and video.
That makes them much more versatile than most e-ink tablets.
A traditional tablet can be used for:

Because the display resembles printed paper, users may find it more natural for reading books, PDFs, articles, and other documents for extended periods.
Traditional tablets can also be excellent reading devices, but their bright, colourful displays are designed for much more than text.
For someone who mainly wants a digital replacement for a notebook and a stack of books, an e-ink device may make more sense than buying a traditional tablet.
What About Writing and Note-Taking?
Many modern e-ink tablets support a stylus, allowing users to write directly on the screen.
This can be useful for students, writers, researchers, and anyone who regularly works with handwritten notes. Documents can also be annotated without printing them out.
Traditional tablets offer similar functionality, often with a larger selection of note-taking and drawing applications. They may therefore be more suitable for someone who wants handwriting features alongside more advanced creative or productivity tools.
Battery Life Can Be Very Different
Battery consumption is another major difference.
E-ink displays generally use very little power when the image on the screen is not changing. This is one reason some e-ink devices can last for days or even weeks depending on how they are used.
Traditional tablets usually require more power because their displays are constantly refreshing and their processors are often handling applications, video, wireless connections, and other background tasks.
Battery life still varies considerably between individual devices, but the underlying display technology gives e-ink an advantage for low-power reading and writing.
The Biggest Trade-Off: Speed
The paper-like appearance of e-ink comes with a drawback: speed.
E-ink displays generally refresh more slowly than LCD and OLED screens. Turning a page or writing a note is usually fine, but rapidly scrolling through a website or watching a fast-moving video can feel noticeably different.
Traditional tablets are designed for these situations.
If you frequently switch between websites, videos, games, and applications, a conventional tablet will usually provide a smoother experience.
