E-ink displays are designed to make digital screens look more like ordinary paper. They are commonly found in e-readers, digital notebooks, and specialized tablets, where reading and writing are more important than watching videos or running visually demanding applications.

Although an e-ink display may look simple compared with a smartphone screen, the technology behind it works very differently from an LCD.

The biggest difference is how the two technologies create an image. LCD screens use a backlight, while e-ink displays primarily reflect existing light.

What Is E-Ink?

E-ink is a type of electronic paper display designed to reproduce the appearance of printed ink.

Instead of using conventional pixels that constantly illuminate in different colours, many e-ink displays use tiny capsules containing charged particles.

These particles can move when an electrical field is applied.

By controlling where the particles move, the display can create text and images.

How Do the Tiny Particles Create an Image?

A simplified e-ink display contains microscopic capsules with differently coloured particles.

In a traditional black-and-white e-ink display, these may include black and white particles with different electrical charges.

When the display applies an electrical signal, the particles move toward or away from the surface.

If black particles are positioned near the top of a capsule, that area appears dark. If white particles are brought toward the surface, it appears light.

Millions of these tiny areas work together to create the image that you see.

Why Does E-Ink Look Like Paper?

The most noticeable characteristic of e-ink is that it does not normally need to shine light directly toward your eyes to display an image.

Instead, it reflects surrounding light.

This is similar to how a printed page works.

That is why e-ink screens can remain easy to see in bright environments. In fact, direct light can make some e-ink displays easier to read rather than washing them out like certain glossy screens.

What About Reading in the Dark?

E-ink devices can still be used in dark environments.

Many modern e-readers and e-ink tablets include built-in lighting around the display. This is generally referred to as front lighting because the light is directed across the surface of the screen rather than shining through it from behind like a conventional backlight.

This allows the display to remain visible at night while maintaining its paper-like appearance.

Why Does E-Ink Use So Little Power?

One of the major advantages of e-ink is its low power consumption.

The display generally requires energy when the particles are being moved to change the image. Once an image is established, the display can maintain that image without continuously refreshing it in the same way as many LCD screens.

This makes e-ink particularly useful for devices that need to last a long time between charges.

An e-reader can therefore remain usable for days or weeks depending on how frequently it is used.

Why Is E-Ink Slower Than LCD?

The same technology that helps e-ink conserve power also creates one of its biggest limitations.

E-ink displays generally refresh more slowly than LCD and OLED screens.

Turning a page or updating a document is not a problem, but rapidly scrolling through a website or displaying fast-moving video is much more difficult.

This makes e-ink excellent for static content but less suitable for activities that require constant screen movement.

Why Does the Screen Sometimes Flash?

Some e-ink displays visibly refresh when the page changes.

During a refresh, the particles are moved into new positions, and the screen may temporarily flash or invert before displaying the updated image.

This can look unusual to someone accustomed to smartphone screens.

Modern e-ink technology has improved significantly, and some devices use faster refresh modes that reduce the visible effect.

Can E-Ink Display Colour?

Yes.

Although early e-ink devices were primarily monochrome, colour e-ink technology has become increasingly available.

Colour e-ink displays can use additional coloured particles or filtering techniques to create a broader range of colours.

However, colour e-ink generally does not look the same as an OLED or LCD display.

Colours tend to appear more muted, and refresh speeds can vary depending on the technology being used.

Where Is E-Ink Most Useful?

E-ink is particularly well suited to tasks involving mostly static content.

Common uses include:

It is less suitable for gaming, video editing, and other activities that require rapid screen updates.

Why E-Ink Has a Different Purpose

E-ink is not simply a cheaper alternative to an LCD.

The two technologies are designed around different priorities.

LCD focuses on speed, colour, brightness, and versatility. E-ink focuses on readability, low power consumption, and a paper-like viewing experience.

That difference explains why an e-ink device can be excellent for reading a book but frustrating for watching a fast-moving video.

The Appeal of Digital Paper

E-ink demonstrates that a digital display does not necessarily have to imitate a television or smartphone screen.

By using tiny electrically controlled particles instead of a continuously illuminated display, e-ink creates a different type of digital experience.

For people who primarily want to read, write, or work with documents, that simplicity can be more useful than the bright colours and high refresh rates of conventional screens.
